Engine Power Requirement Calculator
This calculator estimates the engine power required to achieve a desired speed based on the boat's weight, waterline length, and hull type. The calculation follows an approximation formula used in marine engineering:
Formula:
Power (HP) = (Displacement (tons) ^ (2/3) × Desired Speed³) / Hull Factor
Notes:
- This is an estimation tool and should be used for general guidance only.
- The hull factor varies based on boat type: 45 for displacement, 70 for semi-displacement, and 100 for planing boats.
- If the desired speed exceeds the maximum theoretical hull speed for displacement boats, a warning will be shown.
- For precise calculations and boat-specific optimizations, consult a professional naval architect.
